Understanding Image Formats
JPG/JPEG — Joint Photographic Experts Group
The most widely used format for photographs. JPG uses lossy compression, meaning it slightly reduces quality to achieve much smaller file sizes. Ideal for photos, web images, and any content where small file size matters more than pixel-perfect accuracy. Does not support transparency. Best for photographs with gradual color transitions and millions of colors.
PNG — Portable Network Graphics
PNG uses lossless compression, preserving every pixel exactly. It supports transparency (alpha channel), making it perfect for logos, icons, graphics with text, and any image that needs a transparent background. PNG files are typically larger than JPGs for photographs but produce sharper results for graphics and text.
WebP — Web Picture Format
Developed by Google, WebP offers both lossy and lossless compression with superior file sizes compared to JPG and PNG. WebP supports transparency and animation. It's the recommended format for modern websites as it provides 25-34% smaller files than JPG at equivalent quality. Supported by all modern browsers.
BMP — Bitmap
An uncompressed format that stores every pixel's color data. BMP files are very large but contain perfect quality with no compression artifacts. Used in specialized applications, legacy systems, and when absolute quality preservation is required. Not recommended for web use due to large file sizes.
GIF — Graphics Interchange Format
Limited to 256 colors, GIF is best known for simple animations. For static images, PNG is generally a better choice. GIF supports transparency but not alpha blending. It's commonly used for short animations, simple graphics, and memes on social media platforms.
When to Use Each Format
- JPG: Photos, social media images, email attachments, web banners with photographic content
- PNG: Logos, icons, screenshots, graphics with text, images needing transparency
- WebP: Modern websites, web apps, anywhere you need the best compression
- BMP: Print production, legacy applications, scientific imaging
- GIF: Simple animations, reaction images, simple graphics with limited colors

Troubleshooting Common Issues
Output File is Larger Than Original
This can happen when converting from a lossy format (JPG) to a lossless format (PNG or BMP). Lossless formats store more data per pixel. If you need a smaller file, try converting to JPG or WebP with quality adjustment.
Transparency Lost After Conversion
Formats like JPG and BMP don't support transparency. When converting a transparent PNG to JPG, the transparent areas will become white. To preserve transparency, convert to PNG or WebP format only.
Colors Look Different After Conversion
Minor color differences can occur between formats due to different color space handling. For most uses, these differences are imperceptible. If color accuracy is critical, use PNG for the most accurate color preservation.
